ABS plastic is a combination of three compounds: Acrylonitrile, Butadiene, and Styrene (thus its name ABS). It is tough and impact resistant, even at low temperatures, and provides excellent stiffness and machinability. It is available in graded levels to provide different levels of impact strength.
Naturally, ABS resins are opaque, but are available in transparent grades that can be pigmented to virtually any colour. While generally suited for outdoor applications, it should be noted that prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause colour changes and can reduce surface gloss. It can also affect impact strength and elastic modulus.
It’s chemical formula gives it good tensile strength, impact and abrasion resistance, dimensional stability, surface hardness, rigidity, heat resistance, low temp properties, chemical resistance, and even electrical properties. It is also flexible enough to spring in order to accommodate shallow, snap-fit assembly requirements.
Key properties of ABS plastic include:
- High rigidity
- Good impact resistance, even at low temperatures
- Good insulating properties
- Good weldability
- Good abrasion and stain resistance
- High dimensional stability (mechanically strong and stable over time)
- High surface brightness and excellent surface aspect
- Low moisture absorption
It’s common to find ABS plastics in home appliances, automotive applications, fixture construction, food engineering, electronics, and medical technology.
