Polysulfone (also known as PSUL) is a thermoplastic that is a naturally transparent, amorphous polymer known for its strength, heat resistance, chemical resistance, and rigidity.
It’s strength and stiffness qualities remain constant in temperatures of -100C to +150C. Their strength, even at high temperature variances, makes it ideal for use in medical environments where autoclave or steam sterilization is required.
Polysulfone plastics are easily processed by injection molding, extrusion molding, or hot forming into virtually any shape. Their properties can be further enhanced by reinforcing them with glass fibres. This produces a composite material that has up to 2x the strength.
This performance plastic is often used to manufacture membranes with pores as small as 40 nanometers. These membranes can be used in hemodialysis, waste water recovery, in the food and beverage market, and in gas separation. It can also be used as a copolymer in fuel cells. Other industries that use polysulfone performance plastic include the electronics industry, automotive, communications, food and beverage processing, plumbing, and medical and chemical fields.
