Building a Nation: Plastics for Building & Construction

Plastics are building our nation…literally! The building and construction industry is one of the largest segments that use plastics. Plastics play a key role in homes, factories, office buildings, warehouses, and retail outlets in both aesthetic and functional applications.

Why are plastics so commonly used in this industry? One reason may be the variety of form, function, and additional design options they provide. Plastics are a great alternative to other materials because they are lightweight and even though they are lightweight they can hold their own as they have high load bearing capacity. They can also act to protect other building components.

Construction design teams use plastics in their designs because it’s easy to form and provides excellent weatherability for outdoor applications. You’ll often see plastics used in piping, drainage, siding, windows, doors, insulation, and wrapping.

Here are the 8 most commonly used plastics in building and construction:

  • HDPE
  • UHMW
  • Nylon
  • Acrylic
  • PVC
  • CPV
  • PVD
  • Polycarbonate
