Creating strong visual identities with polycarbonate: The Umbra Case Study

In today’s world of metropolitan concrete jungles, businesses need to find a way to break the mold and stand out in a sea of concrete. Standing out is exactly what the Canadian-based modern home decor company Umbra did for their flagship store in Toronto.

For 27 years the Umbra brand sold its wares though other outlets. When they decided to open their first retail store, they wanted it to stand out from the competition. That’s why they called upon Kohn Shnier Architects to create a concept design for this important project.

Umbra’s first Toronto store featured an eye-popping architectural marvel sheathed on all sides by 30-foot high columns of bring pink plastic. It’s enough to make passers by stop in their tracks.

The bright pink plastic was made from polycarbonate plastic resin. Polycarbonate was the perfect material for this project because it’s known for its toughness, color fastness, and unique colorability. Plastifab processed the plastic resin into the semi-finished shape for installation by AL Plastics in Toronto.

30-foot columns of bright pink plastic is enough to make the Umbra flagship store stand out during the day, and even more so at night when it’s back lit for maximum night exposure.
