All About Thermoplastic Elastomers (TPE)

Thermoplastic Elastomers (TPE) is a flexible plastic that has the benefits of thermoplastics and rubbers. They’re used in a wide range of applications including snowmobile tracks, roofing materials, catheters and other medical devices, weatherstripping, shoe soles, and suspension bushing, to name a few. TPE plastic is also commonly used as 3D printing filament.

TPE plastic can be used on its own, or added to other thermoplastics to improve their impact strength.

Benefits of Thermoplastic Elastomers:

  • recyclable
  • requires no compounding or need for reinforcing agents, stabilizers or cure systems
  • potential for excellent thermal properties under the right environmental conditions
  • take less energy to produce
  • lower fabrication costs
  • easily coloured or dyed

There are 3 key characteristics of TPE plastics:

  • ability to return to its original shape after stretching
  • processable as a melt at high temperatures
  • lacking significant creep or deformation.
